Dark Emergence is a 3D third-person fantasy horror RPG that I created for a school project. The GDD details several key pieces of information like the high concept, features, story, gameplay loops, combat overview, HUD mock ups and elements, characters and enemies. Note, the art used throughout the document are images I found online. I edited only a few images in photoshop for the controller matrix and low-fidelity and high-fidelity HUD mockups.
High Concept: Dark Emergence is a third-person fantasy-horror RPG that puts players in the shoes of college students who finds themselves trapped in another dimension after a failed science experiment with their professor. The dimension has been ravaged by a mind-altering disease, colloquial referred to as the “Corruption,” leaving the sick aggressive and confused.
Synopsis: Regardless of which character the player chooses as their main character, they’ll find themselves alone and lost in the dimension. After a little exploration, they’ll encounter their first corrupted: an aggressive walker buck with a broken antler. They’ll be rescued and taken in by a small group of survivors. From there, the player will be taught how to survive in the new dimension as they try to find a way back home.
The player’s main objectives will be to find their friends and professor and recreate the dimension machine to return home. They’ll travel to several places in search of their friends, parts, and potentially find a way to deal with the corrupted while making contact with other survivors. They can explore the swamp surrounding their base, a metropolitan area, and several forested and countryside areas.
Gameplay Overview: Players will spend the majority of their time exploring the dimension and combatting Corrupted enemies. All characters will have the same basic attack and defense abilities but they’ll each have their own unique combat abilities to upgrade. The player will also be able to unlock additional ability trees for their player.
While the player completes the main story line, they’ll have several side story lines they can follow. These include gathering resources to upgrade armor and weapons, reinforcing the main base and outposts, helping other survivors, and improving relationships with characters in their party.
Some decisions made during missions will affect the overall story, the state of the dimension, and relationships with characters. High relationships can positively influence the outcome of missions while low relationships can negatively effect the outcome.
